9.28.2001 Freedom: Does it Still Ring? Listen Listen

What does freedom mean to you? Let us know what you think.

Excerpts from hijackers' guide book.

Freedom is a concept that most of us take for granted. In his address to Congress, President Bush has said that "freedom and fear are at war." But what is this concept of freedom that we hold so dear?

According to Eric Foner, the concept of freedom has meant different things at different times. Slavery was once thought compatible with a nation of freedom. The terrorist attacks have created the latest dialogue on how we as a country understand freedom.

Guest:

  •  Eric Foner, author of "The Story of American Freedom"

  •  Gerald Coffee, retired navy captain, author of "Beyond Survival: Reaffirming the Invincibility of the Human Spirit"

Also, Washington Post reporter Peter Finn on the investigation in Europe.

    Reforming the Military   Listen Listen

Before September 11th, the biggest military debates surrounded the possible creation of a missle defense shield and which military bases in the U.S. should be closed. But the terrorist attacks of earlier this month have brought much more fundamental issues to the forefront.

Is it time to overhaul our military priorities? Have we entered an age when large armies and huge weapons are less important? Do we need to reallocate our resources away from military build-up and more towards defense and special forces?

    Guests:

  •  Michelle Flournoy, Senior advisor at the Center for Strategic And International Securities

  •  General John Reppert, Executive Director of Harvard's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs

Also, Paul Krugman on when the economy will turn around.
