10.01.2001 Entertainment: Is it OK to Laugh Again? Listen Listen

Have you had any interest in TV or movies since the attacks? Share your thoughts in the forum.

In the days following September 11th, late night talk shows took several days off. Broadway shows played to half-filled houses. Movie releases and fall television were delayed.

Entertainment seemed so frivolous after several thousand people, and our sense of safety, perished in a plane crash in New York. Robert Thompson of Syracuse University says popular culture will be back and may provide the salve our society desperately needs.

Guests:

  •  Robert Thompson, Professor of Media and Popular Culture at Syracuse University

  • Charlie Pierce, columnist for Esquire Magazine

Also, Robert Siegel of the satirical weekly The Onion on finding a shred of humor in tragedy.

Iran: Friend or Foe? Listen Listen

Last month, Iran strongly condemned the terrorist attacks on the United States, leading some to wonder if U.S.-Iranian relations might be entering a new phase of cooperation after decades of antagonism. But late last week, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei bluntly ruled out Iranian support of U.S.-led military activity. Over the weekend, Iran warned the U.S. about using its airspace.

Pro-western moderates have gained influence in Iran in recent years. Bahman Baktiari of the University of Maine says while some overtures of friendship have been made, there are some aspects of the two nations that will always lead to tension.

    Guests:

  •  Bahman Baktiari, Professor of Political Science, University of Maine

  •   Jackie Lyden, NPR's Middle East Correspondent

Also, The Washington Post's John Ward Anderson with the latest from Tehran.
