10.02.2001 The Third World: A Coming Anarchy? Listen Listen

Should we have seen these attacks coming? Share your thoughts.

Read an excerpt from "The Coming Anarchy"

In the prosperous nineties, everything seemed right with the world. But outside our borders, Robert Kaplan warned that chaos and anarchy were brewing. While Americans enjoyed their vacations and lattes, poverty pervaded the rest of the world. And it was only a matter of time before the third world revolted.

Before September 11th, many did not take Robert Kaplan seriously. Now, people are taking notice. And Kaplan says that's a good thing: because unless something changes, we will only see more stress and more instability in these countries.

Guest:

  •  Robert Kaplan, author of "The Coming Anarchy"

Also, BBC correspondent Susanna Price in Islamabad on attempts to bring humanitarian aid to Afghani refugees.

India and Pakistan: A Himalayan Time Bomb? Listen Listen

As the world's attention focuses on Afghanistan, just to the east lies the explosive region of India and Pakistan. Yesterday in the Indian state of Kashmir, Islamic militants from Pakistan killed 30 with a car bomb and gunfire. Rebels have been fighting for years for independence from India. India charges Pakistan with arming the rebels.

The border squabbles and political instability in Pakistan and India are problematic enough. But the problem is compounded by the situation in Afghanistan and the nuclear capabilities of both nations. Could instability in the Himalayas possibly lead to nuclear war?

    Guests:

  • Stephen Cohen, Senior Fellow in Policy Studies at the Brookings Institute
  • William Clark, Jr., former U.S. Ambassador to India

Also, Charles Heyman, editor of "Jane's World Army" on how the West is preparing for war.
