10.09.2001 The Fundamentalist Islamic View of the World Listen Listen

Can Western and Islamic culture co-exist? Share your thoughts in the forums.

Fundamental Islamists believe in a very specific world order...that God's law should influence everything, from our government to our social interactions. They say that capitalism is immoral. And, as we saw last month, there are some who are willing to die or kill to bring about this vision.

What exactly is the fundamentalist Islamic view of the world? And how does the West fit in?

Guests:

  •  Frank Vogel, Director of Islamic Legal Studies Program at Harvard Law School
  • Timur Kuran, Professor of Islamic Thought and Culture, University of Southern California

Also, Scott Peterson of the Christian Science Monitor reports from Afghanistan.

The Forums: What government programs are you willing to have cut to finance the war on terrorism?

Financing the War on Terrorism Listen Listen

Air strikes are being directed at sites in Afghanistan. Security has been beefed up at airports and stadiums and national monuments. Clean up costs in New York and Washington will run into the tens of billions. The question becomes: how are we going to pay all of the costs related to the war on terrorism?

In early September, the talk in Washington revolved around a shrinking surplus. The surplus is gone, and the terrorism-related bills are mounting. Could this new war lead to a financial crisis?

    Guests:

  • Greg Ip, reporter with the Wall Street Journal
  • James Galbraith, Professor of Public Affairs and Government at the University of Texas

Also, Harvard biologist Mathew Messelson explains why the anthrax cases in Florida may be a cause for alarm.
