10.17.2001 The Debate Within Listen Listen

The Forums: Do you side with the Defense Department or the State Department?

Learn more about anthrax and other agents.

As the bombing continues in Afghanistan and the "War on Terrorism" wages on, a battle has been brewing within the Bush Administration as to how to procede. The more hawkish elements of the Defense Department want to expand the war beyond Afghanistan to include Iraq and other targets. Colin Powell and the State Department, worried about cementing the alliance behind the current wave of attacks.

So far, it appears the State Department has won the President's ear. This hour we examine the arguments on both sides and discuss which department is likely to get its way.

The Psychology of the Nation Listen Listen

Just as the country was beginning to heal from watching the largest attack on our soil in history, anthrax attacks have shut down Congress and put the nation back on edge. The issues and fears we are dealing with -- large-scale attacks and insidious biological assaults in our own country -- were unimaginable two months ago. A decade of confidence has given way to an age where we fear airplanes; the mail; and public transportation.

How is the nation holding up under this tremendous psychological stress? Is the constant coverage on CNN a comfort or a further source of anxiety?
