10.18.2001 The End of the Post Cold War Era Listen Listen

The Forums: Is the current crisis more dangerous than the Cold War?

The fall of the Berlin Wall marked the end of the Cold War and the beginning of the post-Cold War era. According to Cold War historian John Lewis Gaddis, the post-Cold War era came to an end on September 11th.

The Cold War period was the last time the security of our nation seemed at risk. John Lewis Gaddis joins us this hour to discuss the lessons we learned during the Cold War that we can apply to our current crisis.

Guest:

  • John Lewis Gaddis, author of "The United States and the Origins of the Cold War" and "We Now Know : Rethinking Cold War History"

Also, The Christian Science Monitor's Robert Marquand in Shanghai on President Bush's trip to China.

The Growing Refugee Problem Listen Listen

As bombs continue to fall on Afghanistan, the unintended damage continues to pile up. Thousands of Afghans have fled their home since the airstrikes began two weeks ago. Fifty thousand refugees have turned up in Pakistan since September 11th. Tens of thousands or more have fled their homes and headed for the hills within Afghanistan over the past several weeks.

Why are these Afghans fleeing their homes when the U.S. says it is targeting only Taliban sites? What is life like as a refugee? And what can be done to help the now 4 million Afghan refugees worldwide?

    Guests:

  • Rina Amiri, emigrated as a child with family 20 years ago, as part of the first wave of Afghan refugees
  • Guenet Guebre-Christos, regional representative for UN High Commissioner for Refugees

Plus, Gideon Remez, foreign news editor for Israel Radio on the latest tension between Israel and Palestine.
