10.30.2001 US-Israeli Relations in Context Listen Listen

Forums: Does the U.S. need to rethink its relationship with Israel?

Timeline on the history of US-Israel relations.

Israeli troops continued their withdrawal from Palestinian territories today, after intense pressure from the United States. The Bush Administration has been working hard to reduce the violence between Israelis and Palestinians that has escalated over the past couple of weeks, afraid that it might jeopardize its alliance in the war on terrorism.

The U.S. has been Israel's most valuable ally throughout its history. But the friendship has frequently been strained. How has the relationship between the U.S. and Israel evolved over the years? How stable is it now during this critical period?

  • Shlomo Avineri, Director of the Foreign Ministry under the first regime of Yitzhak Rabin, 1975-1977
  • Steven Spiegel, Author of ``The Other Arab Israeli Conflict''

Immigration: Should We Tighten the Borders? Listen Listen

In the past, arguments over U.S. immigration policy revolved around the economic impact that new citizens would have on those already living here. In the post-September 11th world, that discussion has moved to include questions about domestic security.

Yesterday, President Bush announced an initiative to strengthen the intelligence capacities of immigration officials to prevent would-be terrorists from entering the country. But Bush sounded a moderate note, underscoring the importance of keeping our borders open. In this time of heightened anxiety, many are calling for dramatic changes in immigration policies. Is it time for the U.S. to tighten its borders?

    Guests:

  • Steven Camarata, Director of research for the Center for Immigration Studies
  • Jake Tapper, Washington correspondent for Salon-dot-com

Plus, Lynn Franco of the Conference Board's Consumer Research Center on declining consumer confidence.
