11.06.2001 The Feminist Critique of the War Listen Listen

Forums: Are you comfortable with the direction the war on terrorism is going?

Conversations about war tend to be decidedly male-dominated. Take Condoleezza Rice out of the equation, and nearly all of the decisions in the war on terrorism are being made by men. On countless talk shows, mostly male guests debate the merits and tactics of the war.

Where are the female voices in the discussion? If women had more of a voice in the debate, how might the response to September 11th have shaped up differently? Tonight, a feminist theorist has her say.

Guest:

  • Jyoti Puri, Professor of sociology at Simmons College and author of the forthcoming "Introducing Nationalism"

Also, Dr. John Treanor of University of Rochester on his study looking for solutions to the smallpox vaccine shortage.

The Long View: Energy Policy Listen Listen

All this week, WBUR's "Special Coverage" will look beyond the horizon at some of the big issues that the September attacks have made even more urgent. Examining where we want these issues to be in 10 or 15 years will hopefully guide our policies today.

Tonight: an examination of U.S. energy policy. In the early days of the Bush administration, as electrical grids were facing overloads, energy policy took center stage. Now, with the U.S. at war with an Arab nation, our reliance on foreign oil has put our energy needs back in the spotlight. An OPEC oil embargo could cripple the nation. What do we want our energy consumption to look like a decade from now? Do renewable resources like solar power or new technologies hold the key? Or do we need to exploiting new sources of oil outside of the Middle East?

    Guests:

  • Daniel Kammen, Professor of energy and society at the University of California at Berkeley
  • Karl Rabago, former US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Energy in the Clinton Administration

Plus, retired Brigadier Gen. John Reppert on how the military campaign is progressing.
