Forums: Do you trust the Northern Alliance?

Read Scott Peterson's report from Kabul

Timeline on the history of war in Afghanistan

Northern Alliance troops have moved into Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, after Taliban troops withdrew early Tuesday morning. The Alliance immediately called for the United Nations to send envoys to begin setting up an interim government for Afghanistan.

The dramatic retreat of the Taliban has raised hopes that the campaign in Afghanistan may be shorter than originally anticipated. For weeks, there has been negative speculation that we might be entering a quagmire; that the harsh winter would entrench the Taliban; that bombing during Ramadan would shake the U.S.-led alliance. But today's news raises the possibility that everything is going according to plan. This hour, we look at the best-case scenario in Afghanistan.

Guests:

  • MacKubin Thomas Owens, Professor of strategy and force planning at the Naval War College
  • Anwar Ahady, Professor of Political Science at Providence College

Plus, Scott Peterson of The Christian Science Monitor reports from Kabul.

A New York State of Mind Listen Listen

Dealing with an attack that killed thousands and toppled its two most important buildings would try any city. Add onto that a plane crash, big drops in tourism, and transition of power to a new mayor, and New York City is facing circumstances unprecedented in American history.

Mayor Rudolph Giuliani has consistently urged New Yorkers to stick to their normal lives in the face of all its new threats. A new ad campaign starring some of New York's best known stars tout New York as the place where dreams still come true. But how is "the city" holding up under all of these pressures? Has it lost some of its bravado, or will New Yorkers always be New Yorkers?

    Guests:

  • Dorothy Samuels, member of The New York Times Editorial Board
  • Dr. Ian Miller, Clinical Psychologist in New York City. Red Cross volunteer at Ground Zero

Plus, Special Coverage's Jill Kaufman on the challenges facing charities after September 11th.
