Technical Backgrounder on Airbus A300 (from Airbus web site)

A300-600

Description
The Airbus A300-600 is a wide-body, twin-engine aircraft, which typically carries up to 266 passengers in a two-class, twin-aisle cabin on medium range routes of up to 4,150 nautical miles (7,700km). It can also carry up to 23 industry-standard LD3 cargo containers.

The A300-600 is operated by two pilots, and a crew of cabin attendants whose number varies according to the operators’ seating configuration.

The A300-600 has a typical cruise speed of Mach 0.79 and a maximum operating speed of Mach 0.82.

Four variants exist, each representing an increase in maximum take-off weight, fuel capacity and range capability, including the A300-600, A300-600R, A300C4-600 and the all cargo A300-600F.

The A300-600 has a maximum take-off weight of 377,900 lb (171,4 tonnes) and carries up to 18,000 US Gallons (68,150 litres) of fuel. The fuel tanks are located in the wing and in the wing centre section. The A300-600R has an additional fuel tank integrated into the tailplane.

Engines
The A300-600 can be equipped with two General Electric CF6-80C2 or Pratt & Whitney PW4000 turbine engines, which generate between 56,000 and 61,500lbs (249-270kN) of thrust.

History
Airbus launched the A300-600 programme on 16 December 1980. It first flew on 8 July 1983 whereafter three aircraft participated in a rigorous flight test and airworthiness certification programme during which they accumulated over 600 flight hours. The A300-600 entered commercial service on 25 March 1984.

By the end of October 2001, 242 A300-600s were in service with 27 operators worldwide. To date, the global A300-600 fleet has accumulated some 5.560 million flight hours in some 2.886 million flights.

Where the A300-600 is made
A300-600 major sub-assemblies are produced in northern France, Germany, the UK and Spain. Final assembly takes place in Toulouse, southern France. Interiors are equipped at Airbus’ Hamburg facility where customers’ own choice of seats, galleys, bathrooms, furnishings and other equipment are installed.
