Resume

As a boy growing up in Iran, Vartan Gregorian escaped poverty and misery by reading books. As a grown-up, he helped save the New York Public Library and led one of the country's most prestigious universities. In June 1997, Dr. Gregorian became the 12th president of the Carnegie Corporation of New York. He was a Trustee of Boston University from 1976-1989, when he was made an Honorary Trustee for life.

On this week's show, Dr. Vartan Gregorian discussed his new autobiography, "The Road to Home: My Life and Times." In his autobiography, Dr. Gregorian describes his public and private lives as one education after another. He was an impoverished 15-year-old, when he decided to become a "person of learning and consequence," a goal, which he accomplished with help from admirers and his own fierce determination.

This program aired on May 18, 2003.
