BU Creates Research-Sharing Database

Boston University is creating a public database for faculty and students to share their research.

WBUR's Dave Faneuf reports.

Such access is typically difficult because of the copyright restrictions placed by journals that publish academic articles.

BU law professor Wendy Mariner says the program will be voluntary for professors and could help promote collaboration. "It will certainly enable faculty to find the scholarship that other faculty members have developed that they might not even be aware of," Mariner says.

Other institutions have adopted open-access policies for research, but BU officials say their archive will be one of the largest in scope.

This program aired on February 17, 2009. The audio for this program is not available.
