A top aide to the president of the Massachusetts Senate returns to the stand Monday morning in the corruption cover-up trial of the state's ousted probation commissioner John O'Brien.

In the first full week of the testimony, jurors have heard how political influence regularly trumped qualifications in probation department hiring practices. But the judge has made it clear to jurors that patronage is not a crime. Reporter David Scharfenberg, who is covering the trial, joined WBUR's Morning Edition.

This segment aired on May 19, 2014.
