The U.S. Olympic Committee announced Thursday that Boston will be the American bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Boosters say the Olympics would spotlight Boston as a first-class city, while those opposed worry about the costs.

Smith College economist Andrew Zimbalist has researched those costs. He joined WBUR's All Things Considered to discuss the findings from his book "Circus Maximus: The Economic Gamble Behind Hosting the Olympics and the World Cup."
