Key Moments, Evidence From Tsarnaev Trial Day 9: Delving Into Watertown Evidence
Several investigators testified in the Boston Marathon bombing trial Wednesday about evidence recovered after the shootout in Watertown.
Here are four highlights from Wednesday's testimony, and see all of Wednesday's updates here.
-Massachusetts State Police Trooper Robert McCarthy testified about the two unexploded pipe bombs recovered from the scene on Laurel Street in Watertown after the shootout between the Tsarnaev brothers and police.
The two bombs were constructed using metal piping filled with gunpowder and BB's and a green hobby fuse used to activate them. Both bombs were shown to jurors in person.
McCarthy: elbow pipe, 2 inches in diameter. There's a hole in the elbow w/ a fuse going in it. Pipe also lined w/ BB's. #Tsarnaev-FBI fingerprint expert Patrick Moynihan testified about prints from the Tsarnaev brothers he recovered from the stolen Mercedes SUV and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's Honda Civic.
Of most interest to the defense, however, was a wallet belonging to Tamerlan Tsarnaev found in the back of the Civic. Inside the wallet were several receipts for suspicious items, including a soldering gun, a trip to a New Hampshire gun shop, and two backpacks bought the day before the marathon.
Receipts in the wallet--Target receipt: 4/14/2013--purchase of 2 backpacks. #Tsarnaev-Jennifer Montgomery, a DNA specialist with the Massachusetts State Police crime lab, analyzed DNA found on two white golf gloves taken from the floor of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's Civic. The right glove had a large bloodstain on the palm that Montgomery testified was an exact match for slain MIT police officer Sean Collier.
In short--the DNA from the gloves in Dzhokhar's car matches Collier's DNA. #Tsarnaev-Montgomery, under cross examination from defense attorney Timothy Watkins, also testified that she tested the DNA from bloodstains the sweatshirt Tsarnaev was wearing at the time of his arrest. The stains, from all over the shirt, all came back matching Tsarnaev's DNA, and no one else's. Prosecutors, under redirect questioning, established that investigators could have missed a spot of someone else's blood.
Montgomery testifies: all bloodstains on #Tsarnaev's sweatshirt were from Dzhokhar and no one else. Watkins done.— WBUR Live (@wburLive) March 18, 2015
