Prosecutors Prepare To Distribute Bulger's Assets

Federal prosecutors are preparing to distribute nearly $822,000 in assets seized from convicted mobster James "Whitey" Bulger to the families of his murder victims and people he extorted.

A court filing shows the U.S. Marshals Service is in possession of money and other assets found at the California apartment where Bulger was captured in 2011.

A U.S. attorney's office spokeswoman, Christina DiIorio-Sterling, says prosecutors have been "moving forward" in recent weeks to provide the funds to the families.

A jury found Bulger was involved in 11 murders, although he was accused of 19 killings. The 84-year-old was sentenced to life in prison.

Prosecutors have offered to split the money evenly between the estates of all 19 victims, and another who was murdered by a Bulger associate.
