Dion Irish Named Boston Elections Commissioner

The state's biggest city has a new elections commissioner in Dion Irish.

Boston Mayor Martin Walsh on Thursday named Irish, who had been executive director of the city Office of Fair Housing and Equity since 2012, to fill a vacancy created when interim commissioner John Donovan retired. Irish worked for more than a decade in the city's inspectional services department before taking on his most recent job.

Walsh's office highlighted Irish's recent work on automating housing search assistance programs, establishing an inter-agency Boston Lead Paint Initiative, and expanding job opportunities for people with criminal records.

A Dorchester resident, Irish is pursuing a master's degree in public administration at Suffolk University after earning a master's of urban affairs degree from Boston University and a bachelor's degree in political science, also from Boston University.

Janine Anzalota, deputy director at the Office of Fair Housing and Equity, will take over as interim director of that office.
