Brockton's Last Synagogue Being Sold, Leaving City

Brockton's last synagogue is being sold and the congregation is leaving the city, possibly to merge with a nearby temple.

Rabbi Ilana Foss tells The Enterprise that Temple Beth Emunah is selling its Torrey Street building and is in merger discussions with Temple Beth Am in Randolph.

Foss calls the decision to leave Brockton "difficult" but necessary and cites declining membership as a reason.

The number of member families at Temple Beth Emunah has dropped from about 350 families at its height in the 1970s and 1980s to about 150 families this year.

The synagogue, which celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2011, has been at its current location since 1971.

There had once been three synagogues in the city.
