Worcester Reaches Settlement With Black Man Who Says He Was Beaten By White Officer

A black Massachusetts man who says in a lawsuit he was beaten while handcuffed by a white police officer has reached an out-of-court-settlement for $225,000.

The Telegram & Gazette reports that according to online records, the city of Worcester on Monday wrote a check for $150,000 to Gerald Jones, and additional checks for $45,000 and $30,000 to Jones' legal representatives.

One of Jones' lawyers confirmed the settlement.

The city manager did not return a call Tuesday night.

The 45-year-old Jones said the officer made racial remarks and beat him in a jail cell in December. Police say have surveillance video of the incident.

That officer, Michael Motyka, is facing criminal charges. Motyka's lawyer said his client is an Iraq veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder.
