Quotation Of The Week: Opioid Crisis Rages On

What’s This? A newish feature. Each week, we’re going to pick a newsworthy or huh?-worthy or whoa-worthy quotation that stuck with us.

OK, What’s This Quotation? Patti Scalesse, of Everett, speaks to WBUR's Martha Bebinger about her son's heroin addiction. He was discharged from the Marines at age 21 with a prescription for pain medication. Within a year, Scalesse says, he had switched to heroin. Her son is OK; he's been off heroin for 10 months. But Scalesse's nephew died of an overdose.

Where Can I Find Out More About This Topic? Everett had an estimated 23 opioid-related overdose deaths in 2014, an increase from its estimated five overdose deaths in 2013.

This week, the state also revised up the number of estimated overdose deaths last year, from an initially reported 1,008 to 1,256.

How About Previous Quotations Of The Week? They’re all here.
