U.S. Sen. Edward Markey is planning to discuss gun safety efforts during an appearance at Roxbury Community College in Boston.

Markey said he and fellow Democrats in Congress are pushing for a range of gun measures including making current background checks stronger, closing what he described as loopholes for purchasing weapons, and shutting down the flow of illegal guns.

Markey is making the renewed push after a gunman opened fire at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, earlier this month killing nine people and injuring nine others.

Markey will hold a private round table discussion with community leaders, clergy and advocates about gun issues Tuesday before holding a press conference.

Supporters of gun control measures say the government has to do more reduce the approximately 30,000 Americans killed each year from gun injuries.
