Former Staff

Michael LeClair is chief engineer for WBUR and is responsible for all the technical aspects of radio transmission and audio production facilities.  Michael has worked for WBUR since 1986 and oversaw the construction of all the technical and studio facilities when WBUR moved to its current location at 890 Commonwealth Avenue in 1996. Although Michael earned a BA in English from Trinity College in Hartford in 1981, he decided to pursue radio engineering as a career and started a contract engineering business in the Hartford, Connecticut, region after graduation. After relocating to Boston and joining WBUR, Michael then pursued an MSEE in electrical engineering at Boston University, completing all graduate coursework in 1998. All the transmission facilities at WBUR and its additional repeater stations were designed and constructed by Michael and the rest of the engineering team at WBUR.

Michael edits a trade journal for the radio engineering community called Radio World Engineering Extra, which appears six times yearly in association with Radio World newspaper, the radio industry’s leading trade publication, now owned by New Bay Media. The content is primarily white papers of interest to radio engineers and presentations on new technologies.

Michael has been a member of the Society of Broadcast Engineers since 1986 and is certified at the CPBE Level, their highest level of experience and expertise for broadcast engineers in the radio and television industry.  He is a member of the Association of Public Radio Engineers and was voted “Public Radio Engineer of the Year” in 2012 for his contributions to the radio industry in print and support of public radio in online forums.

Michael lives in Watertown and has two children, one of which is now enrolled in the College of Engineering at Boston University. In his spare time he enjoys music, film, biking and travel. He is on the board of directors for Watertown Little League and has been an active member there for more than 12 years.
