Portraits Of Boston: High-School Sweetheart

“A little over a year ago I married a high-school sweetheart. We had lost track of each other, but I had thought much about him over the years. I was on Facebook one day, and I don’t really know why I was on Facebook. My mother had died three days before that, so maybe I was just taking a break. And I had recently reconnected with a high-school friend, so I thought I would look at her pictures. She had an album labeled ‘High School Pictures.’

I thought, That would be fun. Then I saw a picture of my now-husband, and there was a link to his profile. I hadn’t seen him in forever. I thought about it for a few minutes. I was divorced at the time, but I didn’t know if he was married. I thought, Is this appropriate? Well, I’m just an old friend. I’m just going to say hi. So I did. And I heard from him almost immediately. It turned out he was also divorced.”

“Did he tell you if he had also thought about you over the years?”

“Yes, he had.”
