Portraits Of Boston: 'Your Memories Will Sustain You'

“We both lost our mates 21 years ago. I lost my wife, she lost her husband, and we found one another. We were friends before that, however: she went to school with my first wife, so we had known each other for a long time. We didn’t want to be alone, so we got married. I’m 93, and she’s going to be 90 next month. It’s been very nice – we’ve traveled a lot, we walk every day, and we don’t own a computer. We have a lot of good memories, and it’s your memories that will sustain you in difficult times. Remember that phrase.”

“Are your feelings for one another now different in any way compared to your first marriages?”

“It’s genuine. That’s the only way I can put it: genuine. Genuine then, genuine now. I don’t think we’ve had an argument in 21 years. At least, I don’t remember that we ever had one.”
