Wheelchairs That Talk, Listen And Roll On Cue

Ok, full disclosure: this robotic wheelchair project is part of my husband, Seth Teller's research at MIT. But since there's a story about it in today's Boston Globe, I figure it's fair game for CommonHealth.

In the not too distant future, people with severe multiple sclerosis or other neuro-degenerative disorders will simply be able to tell their wheelchair where to go, or ask the chair to figure out where their friends are gathering. The chair will be able to monitor the patient's vital signs while also letting her know what will be served for lunch that day.

If you want to learn more, here's a video on "The Intelligent Wheelchair Project."

This program aired on April 26, 2010. The audio for this program is not available.
