More Reason To Avoid Surgery, If Possible

Surgery
Wikimedia Commons/John AsselineSo much for Nip/Tuck. A new study in the British Journal of Surgery finds that a full year after surgery, about one-quarter of patients report that they're still feeling "less vitality" and 15% are still having significant pain or experiencing emotional problems.

Less than half of patients had achieved "optimal recovery" a year later. And these were not chronically ill people. They were Dutch men and women with an average age of 54 who underwent planned surgery, such as cosmetic procedures or orthopedic work. The full study is here.

This program aired on August 26, 2010. The audio for this program is not available.
