There Are Now 108 Known Cases Of Coronavirus In Massachusetts

Massachusetts health officials announced an additional 13 cases of coronavirus Thursday afternoon, bringing the total number of known cases in the state to 108.

Of the total number of cases reported, 82 were traced back to the Biogen leadership conference held in Boston in late February. The Boston Marriott Long Wharf in Boston, where the main portion of the conference was held, has temporarily closed in an effort to help mitigate the spread of the illness. One guest said they were told the hotel would remain closed for two weeks.

Of the 108 cases, five people had recently traveled; 13 are under investigation.

The bulk of reported cases remain clustered in Suffolk, Middlesex and Norfolk counties. The number of cases in Berkshire County on the New York border has also grown, with eight of the nine cases there tied to the Berkshire Medical Center.

At least 10 people have been hospitalized for treatment, according to the state's latest figures.

The state has only tested 200 people for the virus, and has the capacity to test 5,000. That relative dearth of testing has some health experts worried it may slow efforts to contain and mitigate the effects of the illness.
