Massachusetts law enforcement seizes millions of dollars a year believed to be involved in drug crimes. They can keep the money — even if they don't find drugs, don't charge anyone with a crime, or even if the case is dismissed due to weak evidence.

Consider This producer Matt Baskin speaks with WBUR reporters Shannon Dooling and Saurabh Datar, who reported this story in partnership with Pro Publica.

This segment aired on August 18, 2021.
