Part of the allure of the modified mRNA technology behind Moderna and Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccines is how easy it is to update. Simply reprogram a string of genetic code and behold an updated vaccine that's tailored to fight any dangerous new strain of the virus.

But the booster shots the Biden administration wants to roll out next month will most likely not be re-engineered to combat the ultra-contagious Delta variant.
