Consider This: The government dropped its case against Gang Chen. Critics still see damage done

It’s been a few weeks since Massachusetts’s new U.S. Attorney Rachael Rollins decided to drop the federal case against Gang Chen, a professor and engineer at MIT.

Chen was charged with hiding ties to China on an application for a federal grant, but even the prosecutors ended up questioning whether he had done so. He is one of more than 140 people charged as part of the Justice Department’s China Initiative, which seeks to stamp out Chinese economic espionage.

Critics of Chen’s ordeal say it demonstrates fundamental problems with the program.
