The same chemical process that ruins your bike chain and outdoor grill could help power the electric grid of the future.

A Somerville company is building batteries that run on iron rust. The scientists claim their low-cost technology can store power generated by renewable energy sources and release it for days at a time when the wind doesn’t blow and the sun doesn’t shine.

Consider This cohost Simón Rios speaks with WBUR senior correspondent Bruce Gellerman, who reports that if this works, rust could help save the planet from catastrophic climate change.

This segment aired on February 18, 2022.
