A Young Marine

Neighbors on Carleton Street in Newton, Massachusetts gathered for a cookout recently, to say goodbye to Brandon Baia. The Marine private was home on what could be his last leave before he's deployed to Afghanistan. Here and Now's Alex Ashlock has our report.

Writer, former Marine and former Assistant Secretary for Defense Bing West just got back from his fourth trip to Afghanistan and finds flaws in the emerging U.S. strategy in the country.

Also, Britain says farewell to its last link to the horrors of trench warfare, veteran Harry Patch. We'll hear part of a song Radiohead recorded in honor of Patch. It's called "Last Tommy."

Distracted Drivers

The Obama Administration is hosting a distracted driving summit next month in order to look at data about drivers who are using cellphones or texting when they're behind the wheel. Our guest is Clarence Ditlow, executive director of the Center for Auto Safety.

Beauty and Evolution

Studies show that attractive people are more likely to have girls — leading some scientists to argue there are more and more beautiful women around. We'll speak with Satoshi Kanazawa, evolutionary psychologist and professor at the London School of Economics and author of the blog, "The Scientific Fundamentalist," for the magazine Psychology Today.

The Leaf

This week Japanese automaker Nissan unveiled its long awaited electric car. The Leaf is a 5 door, mid-size hatchback with a 100 mile cruising range and a top speed of 90 miles an hour. The Leaf will hit showrooms in late 2010, but will Americans buy it? Our guest is Jim Montavalli, contributor to the New York Times' "Wheels" blog and author of "Forward Drive: The Race To Build Clean Cars For The Future."

Rock legend Paul McCartney played at Fenway Park here in Boston last night. Robin Young was there and has some thoughts.
