A government official in Britain told the AP that terrorists had plotted to strike locations in Europe with shooting sprees similar to the one that took place in Mumbai, India in 2008. The plot, according to the official, was in “its embryonic stages,” but is still active. Our guest is Peter Bergen of the New America Foundation.

33 miners trapped underground in Chile for nearly two months could be out sooner than originally thought. Rescuers digging to reach the men say one of their drills has cut through 164 feet of rock in 24 hours. At that rate, they could be ready to bring the men to the surface by the middle of October. The miners have been trapped a half mile underground since the mine collapsed on August 5. The BBC's Piers Scholfield joins us from the mine with an update.
