There are some positive signs that the economy is improving: the country's GDP is growing, and has recovered more quickly than that of Japan, Britain or Germany.

But despite that growth, the U.S. unemployment rate is higher than the rate in Canada, most European countries and even China, and that has many experts baffled. We learn more with columnist David Leonhardt of the New York Times.
