A Saudi Arabian military force of about 1,000 troops has entered the Gulf kingdom of Bahrain today, according to reports quoting Saudi military sources.

The Saudi officials say the force is there under the authority of the six-member regional block, the Gulf Co-operation Council, and will protect Bahraini government facilities from pro-democracy demonstrators.

We speak with Shadi Hamid, director of research at the Brookings Doha Center.

This segment aired on March 14, 2011.
