Patsy McGarry, religious affairs reporter for the Irish Times, is making the provocative case that the clergy sex abuse scandal here in the U.S., and around the world, has its roots in Ireland.

He says a combination of history, culture and theology created a climate that encouraged abuse. That's why, he says, you see so many Irish names when priests are accused and found guilty of child sexual abuse.
