Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation is the second-largest media conglomerate, owning the hugely influential American media outlets the New York Post, the Wall Street Journal and Fox News.

On Monday the British tabloid The Mirror reported that journalists for Murdoch's now-defunct News Of The World tabloid wanted to hack into the phones of 9/11 victims.

That prompted several U.S. lawmakers to call on the Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission to investigate the company, to make sure its reporters and editors did not break U.S. law.

Guest:

  • David Carr, the Media Equation columnist for the New York Times

This segment aired on July 14, 2011.
