Boston Globe film critic Ty Burr says that 1986 was a great year for films.

Though "Top Gun"and "Crocodile Dundee" were the biggest films at the box office, Ty Burr remembered others more fondly: Platoon", "She's Gotta Have it" and "Pretty in Pink" are just a few on his line-up of memorable films.

But Ty has a few standouts: David Lynch's "Blue Velvet", Jonathan Demme's "Something Wild" and James Cameron's "Aliens".

He says the first two really reflect the mood of the Reagan era, and that "Aliens" is one of the finest pure action movies ever made by the Hollywood system.

Ty Burr's Picks Of '86:

  • "Platoon"
  • "Aliens"
  • "The Color of Money"
  • "Blue Velvet"
  • "She's Gotta Have It"
  • "Stand By Me"
  • "Pretty in Pink"
  • "The Fly"
  • "Hoosiers"
  • "Manhunter"
  • "Something Wild"
  • "River's Edge"
  • "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer"
