Syria Agrees To Western Observers As Attacks Continue

Anti-government activists inside Syria say President Bashar Assad's security forces killed at least five people Friday, and at least one activist is concerned about internal strife following two attacks against government buildings this week, reportedly by defectors from Assad's military.

The Syrian government agreed to allow an observer mission into the country, to try to avoid suspension from the Arab League. And the French foreign minister called for more sanctions against the repressive regime in Syria.

Joshua Landis, director of the Center for Middle East Studies at the University of Oklahoma, says the situation inside Syria is "going from bad to worse" and the Assad government is "on the ropes."
