Senate Votes Against Controversial Contraceptive Measure

Access to contraception was debated in the Senate Thursday, and Senators voted down a measure that would have let insurance plans and employers, not just at religious institutions, refuse to cover health services that violate their religious beliefs or morals.

The measure was sponsored by Republicans Roy Blunt of Missouri and Marco Rubio of Florida.

And the vote has caught GOP hopeful Mitt Romney in a gaffe. He had to say that "of course" he supports the measure, after he initially said he didn't.

The measure is intended to cancel a rule from the Obama administration requiring health insurers to cover contraception for employees of religiously affiliated institutions such as Roman Catholic universities and hospitals.
