Jack DeJohnette has played drums with the likes of Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett and Gary Peacock and has made hundreds of recordings in his more than five decades in the music business.

But on his new CD "Sound Travels," DeJohnette does much more than percussion: he also composes and plays acoustic piano.

He tells Here & Now's Robin Young that he actually studied classical piano growing up in Chicago and became a recognized pianist with a jazz combo.

It was when the combo's drummer left his set in DeJohnette's basement that DeJohnette says he started experimenting, playing along with his favorite records.

"The drums kind of got hold of me," he said. "They were very natural for me. So I eventually wound up working on both instruments."
