Supreme Court Upholds Key Part Of Arizona Immigration Law
ResumeThe Supreme Court backed the part of Arizona's tough immigration law that allows for police to check the immigration status of anyone they stop.
Others components of the bill were struck down though — they include:
- The part that makes it a crime for an immigrant without work papers to look for a job
- The part that requires police to arrest anyone who they believe has committed a deportable offense --
- The part of the law that makes it a crime if an immigrant fails to carry proper documents
The high court also ruled on a case regarding campaign finance. By a 5-4 vote, the court's conservative justices said the 2010 decision in the Citizen's United case applies to state laws on campaign finance. In doing so, the justices struck down a Montana law limiting corporate campaign financing.
