Wacky New Shows Dominate Summer TV

"Top Hooker" (about fishing), "Princesses: Long Island" and "Through the Wormhole” are just a few of the wacky TV shows airing over these next summer months.

"Summer TV really used to be all about reruns, but now you get sort of a mix of them burning off shows that didn't make it in the regular season, and attempts to launch something that's genuinely interesting. And then you just get a lot of really silly and frivolous stuff," NPR's Monkey See blogger Linda Holmes told Here & Now's Robin Young.

Some of the silly ones include "Mountain Monsters" on Destination America and "Devious Maids" on Lifetime (from the same producer as Desperate Housewives).

The more serious shows include "Under the Dome" on CBS (based on a Stephen King book), a Showtime drama called "Ray Donovan" and a crime thriller on FX called "The Bridge."

Holmes' favorite TV show title of the summer is "Drunk History" on Comedy Central, based on a web series of the same name.

"The summer season changed a lot in the early part of the 2000s," Holmes said. "Particularly after 'Survivor' premiered in the summer, they started to try to make new shows, but there also is a lot of stuff that feels like time filling."
