Money Pours Into GMO Labeling Ballot Initiative04:29

This article is more than 6 years old.

In Washington state, the issue of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is the hottest topic on this year's ballot.

If approved by voters, the measure — Initiative 522 — would require labeling on raw or processed food containing genetically modified ingredients.

Support and opposition campaigns have spent millions of dollars. Agribusiness and the food industry have pumped in a record $17 million so far to defeat Initiative 522.

A poll conducted yesterday shows momentum has shifted against the measure, but supporters still hold a slight lead.

From the Here & Now Contributors Network, Austin Jenkins of the Northwest News Network reports on the politics of GMO labeling.

This segment aired on October 22, 2013.
