A high-ranking member of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood — on the run since the July coup that ousted President Mohammed Morsi — has been arrested in Cairo as part of a major crackdown on the Islamist group's leadership.

The arrest sparked riots at an Islamic university in Cairo, where Morsi supporters attacked the offices of the university's administration.

Former president Morsi is also in detention, awaiting a trial that is expected to begin next week.

Meanwhile, anti-Brotherhood figures, including the man some have called the architect of 30 years of corruption during the Mubarak years, are rising to prominence in the new government.
