The new year is bringing bitterly cold weather to a large part of the United States. It's just the opposite in Australia.

Last year was the hottest on record in Australia and 2014 is starting with the same sort of heat, raising concerns about drought and wildfires.

The year 2013 saw some of the worst brush fires on record in Australia. Hundreds of home were destroyed. The BBC's Phil Mercer reports on the rebuilding effort after those fires.
