House Leaders Propose Work Permits For Undocumented

House leaders meeting at their annual retreat outside Washington, D.C. are floating a plan to allow the 12 million undocumented workers in the U.S. apply for probationary work permits, then regular work permits once levels of border security and immigration enforcement are met.

But the only undocumented workers who could apply for full citizenship would be those who, under current law, have legal relatives in the U.S. or employer sponsors.

Alan Gomez, immigration reporter for USA Today, says he's talked with some Democrats who say it's a starting point for a discussion on immigration reform. Gomez joins Here & Now's Meghna Chakrabarti with details.
