Deadline For Health Insurance Met With High Interest06:54

This article is more than 5 years old.

On Monday, the sign-up period for 2014 individual insurance coverage required under the Affordable Care Act expired.

Large numbers of Americans who rushed to sign up for health care coverage at the last minute were faced with snafus such as jammed phone lines and an unreliable website.

Still, it appears the end-of-enrollment surge could bring the total number of sign-ups closer to the 7 million originally predicted by the Congressional Budget Office.

NPR White House Correspondent Scott Horsley discusses the last-minute surge of interest in health coverage with Here & Now's Jeremy Hobson.

This segment aired on April 1, 2014.
