On Thursday, Russia’s Foreign Ministry accused NATO of using the crisis in Ukraine to boost its appeal to members and justify its existence by rallying them against an imaginary threat.

Also on Thursday, Ukraine’s acting President Oleksandr Turchynov said if they disarm and leave the occupied buildings, they will not be prosecuted.

The announcement came a day after Ukraine’s interior minister told pro-Russian activists in Ukraine’s eastern region that the situation would be resolved within 48 hours.

NPR’s Ari Shapiro joins Here & Now's Jeremy Hobson from Eastern Ukraine to discuss the region and these escalating tensions.
