The newly elected prime minister of India, Narendra Modi, took the oath of office today.

His inauguration is the first in which leaders from across South Asia have been invited, including Pakistan's prime minister Nawaz Sharif. The invitation and Sharif's attendance might signal a thaw in relations between the two rival countries.

In a television interview, Sharif said his visit was a chance for the two leaders to reach out to each other. Modi and Sharif will hold formal talks tomorrow.

Relations have been on hold since 2008, when Pakistani militants killed 166 people in Mumbai. Modi is expected to call on Sharif to put the suspects on trial.

Modi and his Hindu nationalist party won a majority in parliamentary elections, on a platform promising to end corruption and create jobs.

This segment aired on May 26, 2014.
